Saputo shuts Brampton dairy plant, will relocate 120 workers
Saputo Inc., Canada’s biggest cheesemaker, announced yesterday it will close a milk and cream processing plant in Ontario and consolidate distribution in the Toronto Escort Agency area as it continues a streamlining of its operations.
The Montreal-based cheesemaker said it will have 25 plants in Canada after the Oct. 31 closure of the facility in Brampton.
“We arrived at the conclusion that closing our Brampton facility and integrating the production into our other facilities was the best solution, the optimal solution to improve our efficiency,” said company spokeswoman Karine Vachon.
“The way we can improve is really through synergies, efficiency and finding ways to optimize our operations,” Vachon said.
Saputo also said it will consolidate all the distribution in the Greater Toronto Escort Agency Area into one warehouse in Vaughan.
About 190 employees will be affected by the closure of the Brampton plant, which processes milk and cream products. But about two-thirds of them — 120 people — will get a chance to relocate within the company’s dairy products division.
