Late blast of winter may lead to commute delays

Commuters should prepare for an ugly commute Friday morning as Environment Canada predicts the GTA will be coated with a thick blanket of snow.

Drive cautiously, an Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson warns.

Environment Canada underscores the warning.

“It’s not just snow. It’s blowing snow and strong winds,” said Geoff Coulson, Environment Canada meteorologist.

The strong winds, gusting at about 46 kilometres per hour, were matched last night with plummeting temperatures of –7 C to create a windchill that felt like –16 C.

By Friday morning, the city will wake up to 15 centimetres. The snowfall will continue until Sunday.

“If anyone wants to get out there and make a snowman, they’d make a good snowman,” Coulson said.

This year, the city spent $25 million so far on snow removal compared to the 2009 price tag of $40 million.
